Homeopathy - a brief explanation
Like most so called 'alternative' treatments, homeopathy addresses the whole person and not just the illness diagnosed. Each individual arrives at the point of ill health via many different routes - maybe an inherited weakness, maybe a recent or long standing sadness from, for example, bereavement or a broken relationship, an unnecessarily harsh upbringing or maybe just for too long ignoring the body's cries for a rest!
The symptoms presenting are the body's way of attempting to heal itself of the emotional or physical dis-ease. Homeopaths call this healing power the vital force and this works tirelessly repairing, renewing and eliminating to maintain perfect balance. The homeopath's job is to discover through enquiry with the client what may be the trigger for the presenting symptoms and to offer a remedy to support the body's healing process, not to suppress or disguise it.
There are literally thousands of remedies and more being produced continually. The sources of the remedies can be plant, animal or mineral diluted down until barely a trace is left and then succussed, ie vibrated, to release the healing energy of the substance. This means the remedies are completely safe for babies through to the elderly or frail. Most people have experienced Arnica as a remedy or used it topically and marvelled at the rapid rate of recovery from a nasty shock or serious injury. The word Homeopathy comes from the Greek word meaning 'similar suffering' and is based on the law of similars ie 'like cures like'. Therefore in first aid (acute) prescribing the remedy Allium Cepa (Onion) would relieve a watery cold or hay fever with stinging eyes and the remedy Apis (Bee) would deal quickly with puffy stinging eruptions. Usually chronic conditions have been building up in the system over a long period and therefore take some time to unravel and clear.
About Judith
My father was a keen advocate of homeopathy and our family doctor was a homeopath. It seemed the most natural thing to me to suck a few sugar pills whenever I was feeling off colour and it was only later I understood how unusual this was in the 1950s. I always kept a minimal first aid kit which came in useful many times, especially when my son was small dealing with coughs and colds and minor injuries. When I was no longer needed as full time mother I attended adult education locally for a year to learn a little more about the subject and became fascinated by the potential offered by homeopathy to treat and cure serious and debilitating conditions. I went on to study with the Lakeland College at Regents Park over the next three years, a life changing experience where I learned to look at the human condition as a whole.
